Project Description

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, first lit on December 16, 1870, served as a guiding light helping ships avoid a twelve-mile-long sandbar along the Atlantic Coast known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The structure took on a new role in 1942, being leased to the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII for use as an observation tower. Shore erosion threatened the existence of the lighthouse, and in 1999 the decision was made to move it 2900 feet to its current location. Today, preservation work is underway to restore the lighthouse and its history for generations to come. The team at Allen Metals is honored to be a part of this historic project.
