Project Description
The renowned New York architecture firm, Thomas Phifer and Associates, was asked to design a contemporary metal sunscreen for a private residence on Fishers Island, New York. The artistic screen for Thomas Armstrong (past curator for New York’s Whitney Museum), was Allen’s most prestigious contemporary work to date. The residence was used to display Mr. Armstrong’s private art collection and was a one-bedroom 12 million dollar endeavor.
The ornamental sunscreen consisted of over 30,000 components and was a combination of cast ductile iron support columns with custom aluminum canopy purlins. This beautifully designed canopy surrounded the entire perimeter of the residence. The screen was created to deflect the sun from impacting the artwork displayed throughout the house.
Allen’s task was not only the creation of the canopy, but installation logistics associated with working on a small island 2 miles off the coast of New London, Connecticut proved to be challenging. This Island sanctuary is the home of only 250 permanent residents but curious visitors flock to this hideaway during warm weather months and is accessible only by ferry.
The project won many awards and has been featured in many design publications.
