Project Description
Constructed between 1902 and 1905, the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse stands as one of only 35 federal buildings designed under the Tarsney Act of 1893. This act allowed private architects to compete in designing federal structures, and the esteemed Philadelphia architects John Hall Rankin and Thomas Kellogg were awarded the contract for this project. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the building is an excellent example of Beaux-Arts architecture.
Allen Architectural Metals is currently overseeing and carrying out the restoration of the original cast iron storefront and doors, including the removal, repair, and reinstallation of these historic elements. The project also involves recreating missing cast iron ornamentation for the transom based on historic drawings, as well as crafting new storefront materials with custom cast iron profiles and updated glazing. Additionally, new steel doors, thresholds, and push bars are being installed to complete the restored entry.
